So another festival under the belt. I'm still hungover and enjoying civilization, I'm not really a camper type. Good news was of course the total lack of rain except during the final concert which you sort of have to accept for good measure.

First order of Roskilde this year was soul diva Duffy. Placed on the rather large Arena stage she struggled despite a wonderful singing voice. She was a bit out of her league, but on the other hand I did enjoy her flirtatious attempts. Soul-hype was switched with rock-hybrid-hype in the form of MGMT. They're not bad, but their lo-fi version of the Killers isn't really my cup of tea, at least live. After feroucious drinking in our camp it was of to cut yourself in the wrist kings Radiohead. Seriously great sound, lots of grade A material, but so lacking in variation and tempo. I took a quick peek at Lady Saw, which was hailed as some sort of sex goddess, but in fact it was pretty standard quality jamaican dance hall. My thursday ended in a small storm of red wine and the best company in the world.

Friday started of with indie-darlings Band of Horses which was insanely boring, thank God they played 'There is a Ghost' first. After that I went to the Orange stage for Gnarls Barkley which was OK I guess.
After that of to one the best concerts i.e. Santogold. An ultra short banging set, all singles all bass - the way every festival gig should be. I liked it despite a lot of complaints of a club type set. After that following a quick rush, I got to see some of Scotlands finest in the form of Mogwai.

Grinderman on Orange was effing great. Nick is a God in man form. As a friend noted he has a presence like Jim Morrison and might I add a voice a zillions more evil. It was great, and great respect must go to Warren Ellis the closest you'll get to an insane mass murdere playing Roskilde.A quick run back to Arena gave me a peek at Goldfrapp which were sadly focussing on their new laid back hippie type album. After sleepy electro it was highlight of Roskilde concert time: "We did this last time Roskilde, we'll do it again. Go low!" - fucking great seeing 70.000 sitting down at the same time, just to explode in to dance. Skinner was the delivery boy, everything was on time and near perfect. Thank God skinner keeps on doing his thing.The Ting Tings were pretty nice. Killer singles and 50% killer looks. Didn't do much during the day, but come early evening I went to the Judas Priest show... Holford moved like a 60 year old man, not that good, but effective. After what could be a show in Las Vegas of to what definetly was a show from Las Vegas, Mr. Solomon Burke. If you walk into a concert and the first thing you hears is You'll never walk alone, then you know you're in the right place.

Night fell on Roskilde after that and thus it was time for Distortion Disco hall of fame captain Neil Young. He was basically the reason I learned guitar a zillion years ago. Young was on fire! Best concert. The day ended with pop heroes Alphabeat on the Odeon scene. A nice party of the people - Fascination rocked. Oh and I dropped by Magnetic Man. Biggest. Bass. Ever.

Sunday was a lazy day for me, so a quick glimpse of At The Gates, party time with Hot Chip and the mighty Jayhova to close it of. Jay-Z received a lot of criticism, but to be fair it was actually 1½ hour of pure fun.

The overall verdict? I'll give it 4 out 5. All concerts were basically good, but the program lacked anything new, but the weather, people, food and everything else was nice.

Straight out of Sarcelle crazy band of brothers called DSL...... ..... ok the NWA joke taken a bit too far. DSL are as you've guessed another French bomb hitting Roskilde. DSL - David, Stephane, Lionel - are brothers, rapping doing the whole Ed Banger thing - and if you still find that just remotely interesting, which I do, then you should definetly check them out at Roskilde - expect a short banging show.

One the few good rap names at Roskilde this year is Canadian Cadence Weapon - A typical blog phenomenon: One song on one blog and whammo signed to a label. Don't say blogs don't do anything good then.

Cadence Weapon's lyrics are tongue in cheek, with great humor and great social insight. Check out great fun number Tattoos and what they really feel like - a song based on the social implications of a tattoo, metatalking in and out of characters piece of hip-hop. This years album, Afterparty Babies is filled with the stuff, and guess what, it's pretty great. Thus for all you skinny jeans blog babies out there - Go get yo' hype on

Roskilde Festival Preview 4

Musically nothing divides Denmark like Alphabeat. The true pop affectionados love them for their impecable take on pop in the late 00's and the rockists hate them for their unpretentious take on a highschool band. I like them so I guess that makes me fit into the first group somewhere.

They are a definete must see at this years Roskilde. I highly encourage you to lay down your rockist arms and enjoy the nice side of life. This is in pop terms as good as it gets (Sorry, You'll always be number one Kylie, but these guys (and girl) are really good).

Roskilde Festival Preview 3

I'm not sure anyone who reads my blog on just a semi regular basis has doubts about my great Hot Chip affection. I find them brilliant and by far one of the most relavant acts of the last 10 years. Playful and creative are the first words in my mind, but in there should also be fantastic live. A group of nerds banging away at keyboards, guitars and what not is an amazing concept. Had the pleasure of seeing them some 3 years ago in Berlin and I am really looking forward to reliving that experience. (Actually I saw Justus Köncke at that concert as well, which was a big deal I guess, but still).

Seriously, the gloves are of now! I could go over and over like a monkey with a minature cymbal about these guys. This is an absolut must at Roskilde - Go, or Hot Chip will break your legs, they will put you down.

Oh, totally forgot to mention one hell of a performance by the almighty Alexander Robotnick at an outdoor festival the other day here in Copenhagen. One of the best nights ever!

Roskilde Festival Preview 2

Finally, Internetz I haz it! Whoopee, seriously! Anygays I'll jump right into the Roskilde preview post. I'm really looking forward to Santogold, though I see I didn't mention that in my last post. Go figure...

Santi White has delivered one of the best albums of the year. It's a ska / reggae / new wave thing which is hard to put into one box. At certain points it sounds like Blondie, at other times it's M.I.A. The album (including its B-sides and remixes) features appearances or production work from Chuck Treece, Cliffored "Moonie" Pusey of Steel Pulse, Diplo, Freq Nasty, M.I.A, Naeem Juwan of Spank Rock, Radioclit, Sinden, Switch, Trouble Andrew, and XXXchange. That basically translates into one hell of a patch work.

It's hard for me to point out a single favorite track, but 'Shove it' is head-bouncing-tastic and 'Lights out' which sounds like it's lifted from an obscure 80's album by some one-hit-wonder who did a hit single for some film about teenage drama is killer.

It's that time of year. It's close to Roskilde Festival time, which means it's time for a preview post! Yeah - big whoop! It gets even worse if you look at the rather amazing Distortion program.

A new album called Don't Stop is in the making, there's going to be Girls Aloud in there and Alex Kapranos also plays along. Pop-bonanza coming up!

I still F'-ing love the Gomma label - truly Germanys finest (Sorry Kompakt - you will always be in my heart). Even more so when they are releasing Antoine Harispuru aka Golden Bug, king of dark synth lines, pounding drums and cut up aesthetics. Golden Bug did a good release back in the fall last year, and it's about time that something new was to surface. The brilliant single I Can't Stop is tse shops Jetzt as they say in Germany.

Today is a single tune post, it's the Cousin Cole edit of Bruce Springsteens I'm on Fire. Not sure how to write about this actually. Bruce is of course the future of rock and judging on Cousin Coles edit, he is the future of remix.
This edit is the most delicate and wonderful thing I've heard in ages, and not just because it's Bruce. The song isn't hammered with Bmore drums and breaks, no rather it is delicatly woven into a space disco classic. This hyper delicate song which is perfect as a gem has become blessed with mirrorball late night heaven. I wan't this to be played when I'm carried to the grave. I could seriously go on for ages about the quality of this edit, but I should Springsteen & Cole do it their way:

The hype mill called the blogosphere is going cover bonanza these days. The cover as a genre is at best a tricky mistress, best left to Copy, Right - an old blog by any standard specialising in nothing but covers, covers, covers, well worth a visit. I usually refrain from posting covers, as they always seem a bit forced, but today is as you've already guessed an exception.

You should know Grovesnor by now, he did the excellent opener Nite Moves on Hot Chip's DJ-Kicks album. A song so stellar that the rest just seemed bland. The 'snor has done a nice understated cover of Robyn's With Every Heartbeat, which you all know by heart:

I've been enjoying the Hercules & Love Affair album lately. Quality NY post punky disco. It sounds like a sweaty mirrorballed dream of the perfect night out. It's got amazing melancholy especially the number 'You Belong' - It's almost horrifying to hear Antony repeat "You belong with him tonight" over and over. Guess what, it's gonna get a single release, and Ryan Maher has set me up with a quality Riton remix of this number:

Ghostface Killah has undergone the blogosphere heroes remix treatment. He's brought in just about anybody who's anybody to remix single 'Charlie Brown'. Normally, you'd be forgiven for being a bit sceptic about a venture like this, but bare in mind this is Ghostface! It's not like he is trying to reach out to the new kids - It's them begging a king, and a king who nods and says: "Yes, you-whom-i'm-not familiar-with, you may remix my single - Now go before I change my mind!"

It's a pretty nice lineup of remixers: DJ Mehdi, Yuksek, Orgasmic and Guns'n'Bombs. Not bad, but seriously the king isn't really taking any big chances either. The track for you to preview, is the bit generic, but hyper effective Guns mix. It's what you'd expect in a good way. I bet first time you hear this in a club, you'll be going: "OMG WUT!" - in other words, highly recommendable.

This last year has been a Hot Chip year for this blog. It's not that I'm stuck in the same groove, but seriously, just when you think it's going to be quit on the 'Chip front there's a new remix. This time by other blog favorites Supermayer.... What's a boy to do.

Enjoy this quality remix which for some reason reminds me of the classic Erol Alkan remix of Boy from School. This mix is what would epitomise that feeling of "We should be going home now - right after this tracks is done"-feeling. It's infused with just a dab of techno, I can't ask for more. Enjoy:

A reoccuring theme on this blog is getting disapointed with the line up at Roskilde Festival. I'm not sure whats going on in the bookers' minds - It's gotta be something along the lines of: "Ok, they've proven themselves in the 90's or been playing live for the last 5 years on various festivals - Now we can book them". It's not impressive what they've got on the poster by now. The Chemical Brothers are as relevant as me at a car show. Or so I thought, lo and behold, I actually like their latest collaboration with Spank Rock. It's back into familiar drone techno territory, chunky beats and the Spank riding them like surfers on the perfect wave:

Finally there's a couple of really good Todd Terje mixes floating round the good ol' interweb these days. Firstly there's a really good remix of Chaz Jankel part of post punk kings the Blockheads. It's from a career retrospective worth checking out! The piano loop in the second part of the song is stellar:

Just a little diddly today. It's a Van She Tech remix of Ladyhawke's Back of the Van. The new The Kills album is great! I quit enjoyed their earlier outings, but new album Midnight Boom is just great. The tracks are even more brooding and dark than you would expect and they just cry out for remixes. Heres a couple of those, expect a hell of a lot more:

There is a new Juan Maclean in the pipes by the way, it's called Happy House and it has this great old skool house sound - piano loop and all. For some reason they ended up being the forgotten band on DFA, which was a total shame. It's clearly the sound of the label that rings the least dated. It's quite enjoyable that the old house sounds keeps showing it's ugly head, it makes you feel safe and secure.

I went to se Justus Köhncke at Culture Box the other night. I've always been a great a fan of his, but I must admit the set was pretty boring. 'Timecode' kicks ass, but how selfreferential can you get? The trick with Justus, and what actually makes him funny, is his two folded approach to techno - on one side it's just killer tunes Justus - on the other side is Eurovision Song Contest future winner / schlager techno king Justus.
Therefore, I was rather sad to learn that it was only the killer tunes (That sounds completely wrong, I know) Justus on his new album 'Safe & Sound', but guess what? He has a second identity - doing pastiche covers! Yes, that's right. Kinky Justice is the name, covers the game. Let's all basque in glorious 80's sounding covers:

Electro Pig Bringing The Pain!

Looking through some of my old records the other day, I stumbled upon a really classic Danish electro tune. It's Bjørn Svin who has been a mainstay on the Danish music since the early 90's. You might be able to find some of his older tunes on the alias Cygnet Committee, but mainly I think he works Bjørn Svin (real name is Bjørn Christiansen) or under the name Prinz Ezo.

The tune of the day Mer Strøm #2 is classic as hell without sounding dated. It's what Grand Master Flash would have rapped over if he'd had his breakthrough as an old man. It grinds like a chainsaw and bangs like (Insert random sexual joke here). The words being yelled in danish "Den skal have mere strøm" means "It needs more power/electricity!"

A couple of semi new remixes by Miami Horror, who did one of my favorite remixes of Music Sounds Better With You. They were big last years, and nothing really suggests thats is gonna change this year. I still love their big sound which sounds like a next years version of The Thin White Duke.

Inspired by a nice article in Danish paper Weekendavisen (Online article here in Danish)I'm going to do a small post on techno legend Derrick May. Somewhere in the late 80's May turned house inside out and invented what is refered to as techno today. This mainly happened with the help of Frankie Knuckles championed track 'The Strings of Life' which. Of course not alone, he is part of what you might call the techno equivalent of the gang of four, along with Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins.
May's releases in general only span half a decade (from around 1987 until 1992), he does small pieces every know and the for computer games or films, but nothing major. He still runs the Transmat label, and recently did a film on the techno genre called High Tech Soul.

Whats interesting about May, besides the music obviously, is his always socio-conscious approach to techno. He always stresses how music, and especially techno with it's 'perfect' sounds is at odds with reality - especially that of his hometown Detroit. His point being something along the lines of techno(logy) is great but it should never be God.

I found this little gem on the hollar board - It's a remix of the great All I Need from Radioheads In Rainbows done by hip cat Them Jeans. The tempo is turned up, but contrary to normal, it actually makes the vocals better. It sounds like a cigaret hardened Bonnie Tyler doing electro. This blog really feels the love for this track. Oh, and don't let the clasher looking photo fool you, this is a nice slowburner.

Feeling nostalgic these days, longing for the good ol' days. Good ol' days is Fischerspooner. Fischerspooner is probably one of most important numbers in the annals of my musical taste history. They opened my eyes to the wonders of the cross over genre in a not-bootleg-kind-of-way and of course to the wonders of gay cabaret techno, not to be missed. Fischerspooner is best described as a collaborative art and performance project created by Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner that makes music, dance, fashion, film and photography. Straddling genres in art and entertainment, the project is renowned for outsider pop shows bursting with stage effects presented in both art galleries and traditional concert venues, and tlt's face it Emerge was a killer track, and it still is. They've just released 2 new 12" on Kitsune as a preview for an upcoming new album, I'm wetting myself already!

A couple of years ago DFA was the shissle, if you didn't know them, God were you out of the loop. It's not like they've been gone for the last couple of years, but the sound, like everything else is changing, and the blogosphere is a random mistress at best. Luckily, the wonderful label is still doing releases to the left of middle.
Hercules and Love Affair is the next thing from them. The band is basically Andrew Butler, with support from various people (Antony, Nomi, and Kim Ann). Album is co-produces by Tim Goldsworthy.
What does that mean? Well basically were looking at post punk sung by Antony (You know the loveable Antony of Antony and the Johnsons right?) - That's pretty excitting! And that's not all, throw in a remix by none other than legend Frankie Knuckles (Look at his CV)- Speechless!

This year could be another good year for Baile and remix kings Radioclit. Radioclit were in Copenhagen last month, a show which I sadly missed. Anygays, the 'clit has done a remix of Danish darlings Alphabeat which is more than worth checking out.
I'm actually all for Alphabeat, but their sound sometimes strays a bit too close to a high school band doing covers of Abba (Come to think of it, that sounds pretty good in a way). There's something in the Danish accent and overall delivery of the music which comes of a bit camp, but on the other hand, who am I to argue - I'm writing a blog. I read somewhere that Franz Ferdinand wanted to make music that makes girls dance, well Alphabeat did actually that. Hopefully, Alphabeat will drop their new album this year, the last one was poptastic in the words of popjustice.The Radioclit remix sets the sails for 24 hour latino carnival town and goes bonanza in horns. I'd love to see Brazilian samba girls shake down to this.

So like any self respecting blog I'll post my end of year tracks. Actually this is sort of the best time of year for blogs - If you surf around a bit, you'll find all the good tidbits of the year. Not sure if it's been one of the better years, but a lot of good stuff has surfaced. Considering this has been a year of the clash I'm amazed at the relatively few classics that have been born of that genre.

Without further delay the top 15 for 2008:

15 - Wale - W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E.
In a year dominated by Justice this was clearly the best version of twee-house classic D.A.N.C.E. Wale effortlessly rides the beat in way normally reserved for Michael Laudrup dribbling down the center of Nou Camp - It's so natural you wonder why they don't do all music this way. The tracks is from the excellent Nick Catchdubs mixtape by the way - Find that if you haven't already.

14 - Rex The Dog - Circulate (JBAG Edit)
It wasn't the year everyone was hoping for - Rex didn't conquer the world with easy digestible eighties electrobeats. The natural crown prince of Mylo didn't have a huge output and ended up being forgotten. This track is fire though - Great buildups and hopelessly lost in 1984!

13 - Junior Boys - Like a Child (Carl Craig)
A remix that only the Craig could provide - One of the best structures of a song for years, the little freak out at the end pure genious.

12 - Copyfokking - Knippelsuppe
Knippelsuppe is Danish for a police beating with night sticks which is the perfect description of this song. Slow and powerful, it's gonna beat you into submission. Like an evil mute twin of the Knife's Heartbeats, it comes sneaking up upon you and whammo! Down you go.

11 - Rufus Wainwright - Tiergarten (Supermayer Remix)
The Supermayer was not as good as I'd hoped, but this track makes up for that. It's delicate and done with the utmost sensitivety. The sneaking beat, Rufus' voice, the point where the bass drum kicks in, the sound of rain, the highlights are numerous, if this song had been released earlier this year, it would have been my number one.

10 - Kleerup feat. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat
Seems like we have to have one good song about a beating heart every year from one of the Nordic countries. I'm not complaining, if they can keep up this standard then it's a good tradition.

9 - Superpitcher - Lick The Pipe
This was the perfect start to the year (or maybe end of last year). Superpitcher remains vital, interesting and of tune. It's understated as hell, while still maintaining a powerful beat. It's not peak-hours, but I'd love to listen to it anytime.

8 - Junior Senior - Headphone Song
The grocely unnoticed Junior Senior EP Say Hello, Wave Goodbye had what I rate as some of JS's best material. Finally they deliver their B52's promise of protein positive dance rock. This song is one long chorus which you wish would never end.

7 - R-Kelly - Real Talk
do I know your friend who? at a club? who was there? Girl I wouldn't... wait a minute, calm down. I was at the club with who? Get tha fuck...man, u know what. Girl I'm not about to sit up here and argue with you about who's to blame. I call no names, real talk. See girl, only thing I'm trying to establish with you is not who's right or who's wrong, but what's right and what's wrong, real talk!

6 - M.I.A. - Paper Planes
M.I.A.'s was anticipated by quite a few blogs, communication managers, fashion designers, music magazines and other people peddling hot air and trends. Thankfully these balloons of hot weren't as hollow as one could fear, and Kala was actually almost better than the first album. Paper Planes with it's Straight to Hell sample and cash registers and gunshots the stand out track.

5 - Burial - Etched Headplate
Burials new record was tremendous. This is the best sound of the big city I've heard in years. Etched Headplate is the prime example of the soulful twist of the new album, and it's the sound of England anno 2008.

4 - LCD Soundsystem - All of My Friends
Great album which should have lodged them in popular mainstream, more funky than Le Chic and more electronic than Kraftwerk. All of My Friends the happy killer song on a killer dance album - in the future all music will sound this way! Honorable mentions go to Get Innocuous of this album as well.

3 - Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor
Do it, do it, do it now, say it, say it, say it now. I'm totally excited by the prospect of a new Hot Chip album - on iTunes my most played song this year is still Over and Over which is pretty telling. This is the preview of the album released in January I think.

2 - The Field - A Paw In My Face
Everyone loves this song. It's easy to digress into some intellectual discussion on the Lionel Ritchie ending, but in all fairness this just a perfect piece of pop-music. It's like racing down and uncoiling a ball of yarn, finally you succeed, and you're left hanging there in mid-space. Best ending of a song this year.

1 - Arcade Fire - Keep The Car Running
One my top highlights of this year was this song at an otherwise pis wet Roskilde Festival. Exuberant, joyful, catchy like hell.

Now if I could just get rid of the feeling of having forgotten something... Oh yeah and for the zombie lovers among you: sorry, couldn't find a link between Mike Ness and Distortion Disco.

And for those of you who missed it - Bruce delivered Magic this year!

Every know and then a small gem just slips you by. Afterwards you kick yourself in the teeth for not taking note. It's something so good that it was too obvious for you to notice, standing there right in front of you. You tried to look behind it and over it's shoulder, but never directly at it. Then by accident you looked directly at it - You saw the truth. So clear and obvious that it was almost scary. If you could just stick with that small gem everything would be o.k.

It looks like Zoot Woman are finally getting their behinds around to releasing a new album. If you're not familiar with this great electro rock band you might be familiar with Stuart Price aka Les Rythmes Digitales aka Thin White Duke aka Jacques Lu Cont and band founders Price and Adams Blake also do remixes under the Paper Faces moniker. Zoot Woman more or less did electroclash (do you remember that genre, that's what nu-rave was called in the old days) before anyone else therefore it's naturally quite exciting when a band of this stature releases something new. Thus with no further delay from the excellent RCRD LBL-blog (A blog run by a group of massively cool labels) the first track in ages:

In the seemingly never ending saga of Bloc Party remix, one has really stood out lately. It's by dubstep man of the moment and general UK music king Burial. It's Where is Home a B-side to Flux, and it's brooding, dark and the perfect sound of november. Hypnotical, druggy and mellow, it's in other words the perfect metropol soundtrack. I haven't done any posts on Burial yet, which is mistake on my part, but this remix will set you up perfectly if want a nice entry point into the grim world of dubstep - Go here for an interesting interview in the Guardian. Oh, and I really like the artwork for the whole Bloc Party album and it's singles.

If you're a regular reader you know I've been championing Hot Chip for long now. Though they are rather old on the circuit by now, they still manage to sound more fresh than out-of-the-oven bread. They are about to release a new album which of course causes tremendous shivers of joy in my mirrorballs. Back in October DFA guru James Murphy did a new mix for the Fabriclive series along with fellow LCD Soundsystem partner-in-crime Pat Mahoney. For some reason I totally missed this gem, which was an obvious mistake on my part. These collections are normally sort of just left of the mainstream with forays into unknown territory. Not so with this one, this one starts somewhere deep in a 1984 post punk basement somewhere in New York, and then proceeds to dig directly into the earth. What is to be find somewhere in the deep N.Y. underground is an effective mix of funk, mutant disco and synth - in other words: Bliss! It, and I hesitate to use this phrasing, fucking rocks!

I think it's safe to say that this 2007 is a follow up to the 1997 Alive record, which didn't really have a great impact on public taste. This new mix reads like a regular greatist hits for the 'Punk. Seriously, I have a hard time coming up with an electronic act having more killer singles in their back catalogue. Thus even if you're not a Daft Punk fan, you do have to give this a listen and acknowledge the sheer ferocity of their songs: Ro'o'oooobooo'o'o'ot - Hu'uuuumaaaa'aaaa'an! Listen to the rising alarm before the song breaks: WUUUT!

It's slitt your wrist weather in Copenhagen as usual which means there is nothing like some good tunes for releasing those oh so precious endorfines:

The Hives are back with a new album, apparently first titled something along the lines of "the best album ever" - now just The Black and White Album (still better than single colour albums I guess, I'm looking at you The Beatles and Jay-Z). Tick Tick Boom, the first single of the album, is proably Hives zen. It's garage rock explosions in it's most explicit form and, I cannot stress this enough, must be played at the loudest possible volume:

Just got around to buying the older Metro Area album the other day. Found at in the bargain bin, and thought I should add it to my collecten. This meant I looked them up on ye old net when I got home, and lo and behold - they are releasing their 7th 12". A smart title choice following classics such as 2, 5 and 6. It's still killer stuff that Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani release on their Environ label. New track Read My Mind is the first Metro Area track to feature vocals, which mix surpricingly well with the smooth and always perfect produced Metro sound. It is highly recommendable and definetly worth a long good listen. This is a low quality version of the B-side dub:

During the busy days of the last couple of weeks, music has taken the back seat, being more of a means than an actual end. Sorry, hopefully I'll be a bit more consistent in the near future. Got a tip from Commodore 64 Look-a-like Mads yesterday: The very excellent blog Awesome Tapes from Africa. A killer Mp3-blog purely jamming to tapes (seriously, we're talking tape-rips here) of awesome tunes from the dark continent. A highlight on the blog is Ata Kak, described as: "It sounds so home-made funky yet spooky, like a warped Prince protege from Africa by way of 1986 Chicago." - Enjoy:

Final focus this post is the excellent new band Turboweekend. 6-7 years ago Danish music was rather emberrasing, but since then, starting cirka Junior Senior, the music scene has exploded. Latest rocket to blast across the Copenhagen sky are Turboweekend made up of Ivan Skavinsky, Ollie Switchdance and Jay Declan (You have to love a band with ficticious names). I'm not sure that they've broken throught the Blogosphere soundbarrier yet, but it will happen! First song was killer single Into You:

If you've read my blog since the beginning, you'll know that I've been a fan of Baltimore based Spank Rock. Rarely do you get an act which drastically alters the rules of a genre, and especially to the extent of Spank Rock. A couple of years ago the hip hop options were 'backpacker' and 'neo-gangsta' - both options painfully pretentiousUdgiv indlæg and totally out of contact with everyday life. Thank God Spank Rock decided this wasn't to be. Baltimore was brought to the mainstream, everyone was yelling Rick Rubin, and 'Yo yo yo yo' was on every end-of-year chart.
If you didn't notice, the Spank Rock trick was to take the 2006 blog-house zeitgeist and mix it up with the irony of Fat Boys and 2 Live Crew, both kings of party hip-hop in the late 80's. It worked wonders, but the question obviously is: "Where do you go from there?"
The only way possible, you link up with Benny Blanco and do a full on 2 Live Crew homage band: Bangers and Cash! The goal is obviously to remove any last grain of pretentiousness and just go have fun doing it. Doesn't make sense? This is how they describe themselves: "Fat girls in a hot tub, popping bubbly, after a long night of playing slots at Caesar's Palace. We sound like the X rated Motorcycle Diaries meets Kweli on crystal meth!" - there you scenesters!

The good money are on these guys ending high on this years charts - The time is ripe for a party. And by the way, the music actually quite good:

Finally this blog's favorite pop queen is releasing a new album - It's gonna be called 'X', out late november!
Mylo was originally assigned to do a couple of tracks, but for some reason they got canned. He's been nice enough to put them on to the internet, and here, without further delay, are the creations:

She sings 'la-lal-la-la-la' on this one, which should be enough of an argument for this song to make world peace. Sadly it probably won't, nice running bassline and Mylo'ish drumsounds.

This track is classic Kylie, seductive and playing. Kylie on the prowl in what could have been a good Girls Aloud song is dangerous stuff - I'm amazed that they dropped this of the album.

Mylo should get his ass around to releasing a new album, Destroy Rock and Roll is still better than most anything released the last couple of years! Go to his myspace and hear unreleased oldie Salt Lick if you haven't already. It sounds like the eighties reborn by Daft Punk!

I don't know why, but Rex The Dog just really tickles my fancy. The amazing use of 80's synths just gets better with old age, much like old wine, Paolo Maldini and errrr cars?

Rex stormed on stage in 2004 when he did the amazing remix of post-millenium classic Heartbeats and released dancefloor classics Frequency and Prototype! His output has been pretty concistent ever since, slowly, but steadily carving himself a small shelf from which he sends beautiful clouds of anthemic dance music.

New single is Circulate, which has an excellent piece of promo writing instead of the usual crap. I'll just do my attempt at the crap writing though:
New single Circulate from Rex The Dog establishes him as the leading man of Miami Vice synth - This track should be a dancefloor mainstay where ever you go. If Phil Specter had to reinvent the whole wall of sound concept today, this is what he'd come up with!
Or something like that. Anygays it's out on Kitsune, and you should have it in your record bag! If you really have to nail the good Rex for anything it is staying with the same sound, but when it's tried, tested, and it still sounds fresh, then why chance a winning formula?

I've been really slow to get into the new M.I.A. album (Kala - out on XL) - It's been really hard finding the right angle from which to approach this latest foray in world music. Finally the other day I got around to hearing Paper Planes which, despite my initial reservations about the gun shots, is mindblowingly catchy. The thing about M.I.A. is that her political mission at times seems a strained mix with her more artzy side. On the one hand it might be that it at some level is lacking substance, I won't be the judge, but it sometimes comes of a bit too speculated. Many artists and bands have tried to ride this razor edge and many have failed. On the other hand being that M.I.A. is an artist I find it absolutely legitamete not to have a hammered out manifesto Manics-style.
Musically the new album is less Brazil more India. She has definetly moved away from the Baile-funk drum heavy Bucky sound and into a more, dare I say it, world music orientated sound.
The result is simply put that Kala probably has more staying potential (In the lack of a better word), but not quite as many bangers as her first album.

If you sit back after listening to Paper Planes and think: Hmmm I know that melody in the background - Good for you! It's The Clash at the peak of their reggae punk powers. The use of the sample actually fits really well with the original Strummer banter. Like M.I.A. in general this song is a classical condemnation of the era mainly directed at the plethora of American influenced problems in the world (for a nice walkthrough go here).

M.I.A. apparently got royally pissed at pitchfork (here) after they gave Diplo the main production credits for her last album. According to the young world idealist it was a joined venture and on the new album the big Dipper is only a small fixture not to overshadow the work of especially Switch - To be fair Paper Planes is actually a Dip' masterpiece with extra Switch helpings. Troelsen, the mastermind of the band, describes the band as a mix of sophisticated beats and the classic pop song - which is always a good starting point! This is the first of a new series of review posts in the Distortion Disco. The Roskilde review was a sneak preview, but this is the first regular one.

Bunny Lake - The Church Of Bunny Lake
Trying to fuse the superficial glitchy pop world with that of the multi faceted obsessive world of life itself Bunny Lake's second LP is what best can be described as a tightly controlled post-modern take on electro-clash. Musically it fits somewhere in the space between the fuzzy electro of Belgian bands Vive La Fête and Soulwax, the anthemic vocals of Chicks on Speed and the spacious synth sounds of Jacques Lu Cont.
It is destinctly European sounding which is both good and bad. Good in the way that it is close to the definetive sound of now, it's dancefloor dynamite, high on adrenaline and catchy like hell - Bad in the way that you might end up asking yourself whether you haven't already heard this before. This double edged sword that Bunny Lake ride is perfectly summed up in the track New Kind of Kick, on which Suzy On The Rocks (The female vocalist) repeats 'I want some new kind of kick' - the album is actively searching for that magic new ingredient and it gets pretty close at times. They are at their best when they allow themselves the time to do the build up like on She's On The Run, Deeper Confessions and Beautiful Car Crash.
Though pressing buttons all over the board, the album is surpricingly coherent and it is a highly enjoyable listen which would be best served at some decadent houseparty in a Berlin suburb with plenty of neon!

Concept records were something which died in the 70's and anyone daring to fly into this part of the musical skies has since been shoot down faster than you could say S.A.M. (With the notable exception of R-Kelly). This though has not detered blog favorites Michael Mayer and Superpitcher to once again join forces as Supermayer and release a dreaded conceptet album: 'Supermayer save the world'. Apparently they are moving away from their delightful minimal roots and engaging in a multiinstrumental pop record. Though the pop angle isn't surprising - they easily have some of the poppiest releases on the Kompakt label under their belt - it is surprising that they've done a whole album. It's out on the 17th of Sept., it features cow bells and should be the only thing you give away at peoples birthdays.

In this world of mass hype that we call the blogosphere you always have certain things doing the rounds. If The Klaxons does anything you know it's out there - If Tiga does anything you know it's out there -If The Teenagers does anything you know it's out there - If Arctic Monkeys does anything you know it's out there - If the latest thing does anything you know it's out there.... You get my point. Actually this is good, you don't have to wait forever until your local record store stocks up on that single or hope your local DJ is going to play that cool new tune to be part of the hype. The backside is that sometimes you just get the feeling that everyone is posting this latest tune because of the name rather than the content - It's all filler and no killer. Just doing it because it's the latest thing.

This is how I was suspecting this following track to turn out... Sadly, it kicks you right in the mirror balls. It takes the best parts of D.A.N.C.E. and mixes it with the best parts of dancefloor J.T. It's got strings, it's got those kool hyped distorted synths, it's got Justin, it starts like Billy Jean, it's got breakdowns, it's got 2007 in it's palm:

New song to hit the net is amazing Headphone Song. Starts out like a Peaches songs, moves into familiar B-52 territory and, whoa baby, it just goes nuts on mainstreet in Amazingville in the last third.

Roskilde Review

First thing is first - This was the rainest Roskilde Festival ever. This meant mud in quantites unimaginable and a couple of rather large ponds of water in now dead tent 'Mont Palace' (Peace be upon your soul old friend, you served us well and will forever be missed). Besides this horrible casualty I caught some sort of wicked disease which has, and still is, threating to kill me - This meant an early end to my festival late saturday night. Thus my review is not going to mention sunday in any way.

First concert was on the Arena stage with barok indie kings Arcade Fire. Ironically, considering this is a four day festival, this was the concert I was looking forward to the most. The concert was everything one could expect I guess. The 'Fire delivered their music with perfect timing, beautiful expression and great skill, but the crowd was simply too drenched in mud to enjoy the delicate sounds, I guess. After a rather slow start it did start to dawn on the throngs that they were witnessing a special band, and in the final stages the crowd responce was getting to where it should have started. Wake Up was great, the stabing guitar intro was desperately trying to compete with the apocalypsian rain outside. Despite the crowd my best concert of the year.

Following this demonstration in church organs and mass-instrumentalism it was on to James Murphy and LCD Soundsystem. Murphy is a weird character, it looked like he spend the better part of the concert rearranging moniters, and musing on whether he should have brought a different synth. LCD Soundsystem are a mixed blessing in my oppinion. They make great dancy post-punk fussed electronica, but Murphy's vocals are really a bit out of place when he isn't giving it his fullest. New classic Daft Punk is playing at my house was dance floor dynamite, All of my friends with it's big indie chorus was better than ever before, and Tribulations still rocks. This leaves the question, why end your ass stomping set with a ballad instead of one the many powerful disco missiles in your arsenal?

Following this I'd planned to go see The Killers, but I only managed to see the last 20 minuttes. Seriously, I was impressed that Brendan Flowers didn't drown on the stage - It was raingning that much. The Killers aren't going to chance the world, but they will hopefully keep on speewing their delightful Born in the USA pastichés at their current pace.

Friday started of with nothing less than a bang! I've have never been a big fan of The Sounds, I've always found their punk-lite version of 1979 a bit lacking, but I must admit I've been corrected on that. Any band who has the audacity to start a set with what is probably is your biggest single is a winner in my book. Living in America tore into the crowd like a great white in a public pool. The outcome was certain victory! Furthermore, Maja Ivarsson looked absolutely great - I hereby give my undevided love to blond girls in leather jackets!

From one powerful frontwoman to another. New Young Pony Club are probably the most group on this years festival lineup, but coming from the small explosion of the Sounds, The Club weren't that impressive. Gotta say I enjoyed their songs, but they would have been better of in a club sweating discobeats galore instead of fighting to grab the attention of wet hype hunters like myself.

After that it was on to N.Y. legends the Beastie Boys. My attendance was more a question of actually seeing them while they still are alive, but to my geat enjoyment it was like seeing old friends you didn't know you missed. Playing Sabrossa caught me completely off guard, I was transported to my bedroom, age 15 drinking beers and being absolutely frusted with girls. It was great! The B.Boys looked like they were enjoying themselves, which in a sense is natural with a back catalogue of their caliber.

After being sufficently taken back into teenage wonderland my drunken brain for some reason decided that Trentemøller was better than going see Dizzee Rascal - It wasn't. What I saw of the live performance of the actually quite good The Last Resort wasn't that impressive. It's not that the music wasn't good, it's just that it seemed as if the Trent stretched each number just a few inches beyond the breaking point, making it a rather tedious spectacle.

The lesson of friday ended up being that female leads rule. I went to see CSS. Same show as I saw earlier this year, but it still rocked. You just can't help but have sympathy for Love Foxxx - A full rimestone suit doesn't hurt either. A small soap bubble stunt early in the concert sent the crowd through the roof. I still love Alala and Let's make Love.

After the electronical let down of Trentemøller I went with a somewhat controlled enthusiasm to the Get Physical night held in the new excellent club arena. Luckily drinks, good friends and M.A.N.D.Y. cured any fears of a letdown. Despite early technical difficulties M.A.N.D.Y. primmed the crowd for Booka Shade's drum/Safri Duo show. I was amazed at the level of crowd responce to some of their songs, and I'm pretty sure the roof would've been blown of, if it hadn't been tied in place, when they played Body Language. My night ended in a hammock listening The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Greatest starlet in a band ever. I have never heard so much abuse yelled in such a short time. The music pretty decent rock'n'roll, but the adlib grand!

Saturday was as mentioned my last day. My health went from 100 to 0 in less than two hours on that day. Started of by seeing The National which had apparantly gotten quite alot of blog hype. Their Leonard Cohenish take on Interpol was just what the doctor ordered when you're tired and sick. This was probably my sort-of-discovery of the year. After that it was pouring outside the tent, so I decided to stay and watch blue grass semi legends Hayseed Dixie - Americana versions of AC/DC - Yes please! Amuzing, albeit not funny in the long run I willing to bet. It was a welcome joke though - Up until then the festival had been a rather serious affair music wise - this wasn't.

Late night entry The Flaming Lips was always going to be a gamble. I've never seen them live before, but I've heard the legends. Sadly, their insane show of confetti, aliens and a giant santa claus, sort of blew away in the wind, quite literaly actually. Wayne Coyne was in a jubilant mood, sentimental and proud, oh how lovely. I normally enjoy their music quite alot, but on a rainy windy Saturday afternoon light psycadelic bubble gum pop found it's literal Waterloo (Ok, the Waterloo reference is too easy).

Went to see British country hag Holly Golightly (catapulted into popular mainstream on that White Stripes song). The warm embrace of country and sitting down was probably one of my highlights of the festival. I'd wish she'd played Walk a Mile, but I enjoyed it anyways. Unpretentious and charming is a good combination - She sports the whiskey drunk country skank look to perfection, I was impressed. I heard from various reliable sources that Clipse and Soulsavers Feat. Mark Lanegan playing at the same time was quite good as well - Would've liked to have gone to both concerts.

Final concerts was ladies man Erlend Oye and his jam band The Whitest Boy Alive - highly enjoyable. The dancy disco indie would be perfect a small intellectual gathering of nerds discussing the merits of Linux while trying to plot world domination. After some food and the sad acceptance of the fact that I was sick as hell I went to see Bondo Da Role - Lasers, Bass and Brazilian galore! If I'd been just a bit more healthy this would probably have been the bomb.

Reports of Sunday tells of decent concerts from Beirut, Arctic Monkeys and Muse. I'm especially sad that I missed Beirut, but my generel health was not worth gambling I thought.

Eager readers of this blog might remember that I mentioned the interesting warm up band at the ESG concert Fabula Beat (They have some new songs on their Myspace btw). The lead singer Josephine Philip is also part of another cool Danish act, worth taking notice of - Along with Ane Trolle (Famed for the vocals on Trentemøllers Moan) she forms the duo Jaconfetti. They've released one single here in Denmark which has received massive airplay - A modern reggaeish dancy piece of prime pop.

Their story (and face it, every band should have stories like this) is something like this according to their Myspace: They bring a universe of confetti and joy, spread out in a colorful variation of many different genres going from heavy beats to sweet balkan. Some might describe it as LSD-pop. On their powerful Rain Dears they travel around in the JaConfetti world, meeting good and bad, fun and dull, and through their songs they tell stories about what they experience.

Indeed... Hard to argue against powerful Rain Dears, but the story fits the generel theme so I'm convinced. An album should hopefully be out soon, title The Rainbow Express - I believe thats what poker players would call: "All in!"

Electronic king of every disco and outhouse in Denmark Trentemöller has done a rather playable remix of Hold nu Kay, which hopefully will be released soon. Nothing like the click pop / massive breakdowns we have come to cheerish, it instead sounds like what Diplo would do next - or something like that. You've gotta hand it to the Trent', he's not afraid to drive down a new road! JaConfetti ends up sounding like a new version of Avenue D. RF Preview - Part 4

Forecast: Rain... Crap. Actually I haven't seen so much rain in late June, as I have today - Hopefully that means that it's going to be all rained out next week. The forecasts aren't good - They have changed for the better though. It actually looked even worse yesterday. Reports from on-the-ground-reporter Duddi, part of the event group at Roskilde, tells grim stories of mudd, the depth of which can only be imagined. Be afraid, be very afraid. Wearing rubber boots just isn't rock and roll. Anyways the music:

Maybe a year to late, but there none the less, will be Erlend Oye's other band, besides Kings of Convenience, namely The Whitest Boy Alive - an apt title for the Norwegan ladykiller.
The Whitest Boy Alive is mainly a nice indie-dancy band backing Erlend, but it is actually quite catchy and will probably fit well with the 21.00 p.m. timeslot on Saturday after a nice round of Flaming Lips.

Last thing I'll see on this years festival is probably French house legend Laurent Garnier playing 20:15 on saturday (If I haven't drowned by then). Apparently so old in the game that he inspired both the Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses. He has been DJ'ing since I was very wee - hopefully he still has some tricks up his sleeve.

RF Preview - Part 3

Going to third base! Apparenly the Danish meteorological service is predicting insane amounts of rain of Copenhagen the next week. Hopefully it's going to be all rained out when we reach the 1. of July. Rain is the deal breaker when we're talking Roskilde and festivals in general. Enough crappy warm up talk, here's the music:

It's wamp wamp time - Clipse is the major hip hop name to grace the festival this year (besides the Beastie Boys). I'm normally not that into the word smith type of music, although Jay-Z of course is an all time favorite, but for once I'm going to put some rap on my must see list. The duo, formed in the Bronx, are curretly based in Louisiana. They made a big name of themselves with the classic 2002 Neptunes produced single grindin', which was a mainstay on the dancefloor just about everywhere. Anyways, Pistol Pete has done a great remix of most recent single Wamp Wamp. Enjoy:

The great Get Physical label is a major presence on this years festival! Besides M.A.N.D.Y. and Booka Shade, they also have the interesting Djuma Soundsystem from Denmark. The sound is described is described as following on the Get Physical website: "Mix Arabic percussion and strings with electronic beats and you end up with the explosive sound of Djuma Soundsystem, a sound that has swept them from the underground scene in Copenhagen into the front ranks of a new signing with the award-winning and respected German label Get Physical." - Up until now, they've only released one single, the rather ethnic dancefloor bomb Les Djinns - one of the best singles of last year in my book - Hopefully they will debut some new stuff on Roskilde on the Get Physical night, which will no doubt take place.

RF Preview - Part 2

. . .Continuing our preview series. This year the smart heads behind Roskilde Festival have done away with the 'Metropol' tent - The electronic tent - and also the world music hippie tent (The name eludes me right now). Instead they've established a new urban scene - Cosmopol - "The stage is a brand new hot spot for underground urban genres and will sparkle with hip hop, R’n’B, global beats and rhythms, neo-soul and music from the more organic electronic scene" - I'm sceptical. I want my techno stage dammit, where the following ideally should play saturday night:

Bmore king / Baile Funk to the mainstream bringer Diplo (Wiki) is already a Roskilde Veteran having closed the festival on a previous occasion. The Dipster has impecable musical credentials, at least partly responsible for the world knowing of M.I.A. (If you haven't heard it, track down one the best mixtape projects ever Diplo & M.I.A.: Piracy Funds Terrorism), Bondo Do Role, and also Spank Rock. Thus you already know this guy has a good musical ear and if that wasn't enough, he is also partly responsible for the huge mashup/bootleg wave a couple of years ago! He is the musical equivalent of a Tomahawk missile with a nuclear device as a warhead - There is something for everyone! Expect big beats and music all over the spectrum. Hopefully, we won't have to wait until late sunday night to join the Diplo party.

RF Preview - Part 1

The weather has been pretty fantastic this last week here in Copenhagen - Sun and no wind! It really puts you in the mood for Roskilde. It's the same thing each year, and you always end up dreading to look at the weather forecast. For some reason it is either sweltering hot or pouring down, you never get the middle ground. What that means is of course planing for the worst and hopping for the best. My camp and me have already started planing how best to bash our way through the hordes of hippies to get that all important high ground! Because of the ever looming danger of the all eating gravel pit you can also end up lying a gazillion miles away from the actual music - Picture a nice half hour walk to get to the actual festival ground. Despite what some people might argue, I'm still mainly there for music and not 'atmosphere'. Thus here is the music:

In what is far from the best line-up at Roskilde there are some exceptions. First one is post-punk / 'Neo Rave' (Still lame genre name in my book) / Latest wave New York group New Young Pony Club. They've been mentioned here a couple of times in the past, but since then they've made an album. They sport the above mentioned genres with a twist of pop - To their credit, they are probably the closest thing you will come to legendary Tom Tom Club. The Roskilde program puts them in the same genre as The Klaxons, which seems a bit far fetched. Rather this is what the Bangles would've sounded like if they had been formed in the year 2007. I highly recommend you go check them out - They are probably the closest thing to a secret on this years festival.

hear the bang, see the spark - duck down, lay down just (get on down) - Just for that I'm looking forward to see Dizzee Rascal (Wiki). He is old news on the grime-scene, probably compareable to the status of Jay-Z in Hip-Hop, captain Rascal is the elder statesman of England. New album Maths + English has just been released. The title aptly describes what Dizzee is all about. Perfectly timed beats with excellent lyrics, he has probably done more to chance mainstream British than any one else. The show at Roskilde is probably going to be an inferno of bass and jumping - you don't wanna miss it: You better send your best soldiers, cos this is Captain Rosco! More destructive and troublesome than ever!

Went to see Art Brut on Friday, having missed them last time they played Copenhagen. Their funny Blur-esque lyrics have taken many of last years end-of-year charts by storm and live they have gained a good reputation as well.

Before the 'Brut though, Black Wire were nice enough to a stint as warm-up - This is apparently the band about which ,at one certain gig, the song I Predict a Riot was written. Against what could have been a toe cringingly small crowd (Come on 130 kroners for Art Brut is cheap by any standards) Black Wire managed to put on a great show. They looked great (All black is always cool), had great tunes and were more energetic than a pound dog in heat. The sound was something of a gothic/Joy division take on Franz Ferdinand - I think they would do great with a polished remix Alan Braxe for some reason.

The Black Wire show was good enough for me to go buy their single - Supporting quality is an imperative. Funny enough, the guy in the merchandice stall didn't know what any of the things he was selling, cost, so I jokingly asked wether this was his first job as a merchandice croonie. Yes, he said, normally he was the guitarist in Art Brut... So instead of selling my anything he told me about the new album which apparently will feature 'a new bigger sound - with trumpets!'. The album should be out about now-ish, next week-ish, or early next month-ish. Furthermore they'd just been to Berlin to shot the video for their next single Direct Hit - someone is going to be dressed up as Caeser in the video - You heard it here first! (Is this really what the mighty blogosphere has come to? Selling cheap info on new videos?)

The concert was excellent, definetly one of the best rock concerts in a year or so for me. Humor is for some reason the answer to the looking smugly up your own arse attitude which sadly is a part of a lot of rock. Amazingly it seemed that most of humor wasn't wasted on the crowd, laughter and cheering was abundant.

Highlights were Moving to L.A., Direct Hit, Nag Nag Nag and of course the best social commentary in a zillion years Formed a Band - "Look at us, we formed a band!"

Finally, the arch-dukes of silent cool are back. Interpol are releasing a new album titled Our Love to Admire (On the 7th of July If I'm not mistaken)!

A new album means tasty new single - In this case The Heinrich Maneuver. Not very much can be said to this track - 'how are things on the west coast?' - hinting at a cross country breakup, typical ferocious stabbing guitars, brooding bass and the ever present sense of demise. If this is anything to judge by the new album is not going to change the way we look at Interpol - and thank good for that! Nobody does Joy Division anno Y2K better!

This week is CPH Distortion week - An annual event which should be taken note of. The various parts of wonderful Copenhagen gets it electronica on and dances four days straight. Line-up here. Everything is as it should be - take note of young Mike Sheridan (about 15-16 years!!). Denmarks greatest up and coming talent on minimal scene. If you don't catch him here, be sure not to miss him at Roskilde, where he finally, if there there is any justice left in this world, will be accepted into a broader musical conscience.

Here is a low-quality version of his great release Alt & Intet on Mermaids in Space. Bass deep as the deepest ocean, click, boom, click. Dancy catchy, rarely does echo effects sound this good. Blogosphere take note!

Every now and then a cover pops up, which is so awesome that it scores off every thinkable chart. Sao Paulo's Jesus with friggin' laser beams for eyes. Take that every other cover in the world.

As readers of this blog might know I like going to the Roskilde Festival every year, and this year is no different. Therefore I plan to do some posts on some the things I'm to see, just to sort of educate the masses - Or something like that.

One the semi-obscure bands to hit the festival this year is Bonde Do Role from Brazil. Born from vodka and an heavy metal bar, and invented by Diplo, they do the bailefunk with a touch of the dreaded 'nu-rave' (Still the worst name of a genre in my book). Despite the nu-rave touch this actually is highly recommendable.

Another pleasentry has just made its way through the mailslot of my door! A niece piece of neo-pop by Codebreaker of Milwaukee. Exiled! as their album is called is a surprisingly nice collection of popgems, drawing from a zillion reference points. Musically it's somewhere between Phoenix, New Order, Yazoo, Hot Chip and American MOR college indie. This album is going to be a smooth part of my summer soundtrack.

Exiled! is the the name of the lead single game. It's funky guitar, handclaps (Handclaps always score highly on the Distortion Disco charts), synths and vocoder. The track is pretty symptomatic of the album - seriously infectious and head bopping.

Second track Are You Ready 2 Love? - A big resounding Yes from here! Any track that paraphrases the bass drum from Blue Monday is always welcome in my home. Aside from that you should note how this song effortlessly mixes a warm disco house sound into a rather fresh sounding new cocktail of insisting basslines and a guitar that James Brown would've been glad to have as a mainstay in his backing band.

So I'm back! Thesis handed in and vacation in Seville over and done with. First thing I did was of course to check my mail and to my delight a couple of remixes had found their way into my possesion. Cool independent label Off the Wall have released Studio's Life's a Beach featuring remixes by both Prins Thomas and Todd Terje. A nice combo which in itself merits you checking out the 12". Dan Lisvikk and Rasmus Høgg have made a small disco gem, fitting perfectly into the scandinavian nu disco sound.

Thomas takes the brooding original and fusses it with with distinct space guitar. Essentially this means that Thomas takes the night party of the original and puts it out there at noon - Sun blasting!

Overstating the understated

Ok, so I took the evening off, so sue me. A good friend, Jens, offered free tickets to Booka Shade at Rust, which in my world is an offer you can't refuse. Anyways I'm sick of my thesis, and if I was to stand any chance of actually finishing the damn thing this week, I needed to just take my mind of it, for a few minuttes at least.
Booka Shade were the masterminds behind last years most understated brilliant piece of techno - Movements. Merziger and Kammermeier as they're known when not producing, DJ'in, performing, or managing the Get Physical label, have created a unique brand of electronic music, which always seems to be just a milisecond of beat or too slow - pure genious
The concert was decent, the place too packed, and the venue too small. It was pretty clear from the first bass kick, that people were there for the hits - apparently Booka Shade have a massive crossover appeal. Night Falls, the third song of the night received a roar. The new stuff was pretty trancy, but with the trademark Booka sound. Highlights: modern classics Mandarine Girl and Body Language (Interpretation).

Canadian popsters Dragonette, made up of Martina Sorbara, her husband Dan Kurtz, Will Stapleton and Joel Stouffer, are going to be big. They haven't released anything but a single and an EP, and already Popjustice are, and have been for quite a while, shitting themselves over the quality of this band. Pop songs of perfect quality, with that added heavy electro synth - The kids are going to go nuts.

I was actually not going to post this song. You can probably find it all over internet or at least in the Mp3 blogosphere.
No points for guessing it's the new Justice track B.E.A.T. - the flipside to D.A.N.C.E. - Seriously, these guys have the iconagraphy nailed. First the flashing cross, now essential words spelled out in capital letters and punctuated!
Both of these tracks - in effect they are essentially the same - sees Justice looking back to their french roots. It is as if the French dance scene is coming full circle - We are now that close to the Da Funk aestetics, that you can almost taste that first time it occured to you that said record was going to be B.I.G. and you fell in L.O.V.E. . Writing this makes me look forward to the actual Justice record, and crossing my finger that Daft Punk will be late showers at Roskilde Festival.

Jürgen Paape is on a creative high. It's not that long ago that he released the disco stomper Take That on Kompakt Total 7, and re-edit Take This on Speicher 45. He's more dancefriendly than other artists on Kompak t, exemplified best by perennial favorite So Weit Wie Noch Nie - clearly able to create a broader appeal, than the rather eclectic sounds of his fellow label mates.

New single is Speicher 47 - Fruity Loops 1. Probably a reference to the music program of the same name, it fusses a strong bass drum, with what sounds like the repetiteve synthchord of Tiga's version of Hot in Herre. Effective as hell, a perfect loopy creation.

Late Nite Wood

Two things I'm looking forward to this year is the new Björk album, and the M.I.A. album. I usually don't care that much for Björk, but hearing that the album is produced by none other than Timbaland does make you rather curious. It's a thing that basically can go both ways. Timbo's albums normally aren't that great, and Björk is always dangerously close to the loony bin. This odd-couple in a studio though might be a match made in heaven (or it might be totally crap).
A more safe bet is the forthcoming M.I.A. album, apparantly called Power Power, which should drop pretty soon. I think we're going to see more in the vein of the Bird Flu song which is like the old M.I.A. with a bit more of everything added. Judging by M.I.A.'s collaboration with Timbo it's going to be good, and it also shows that Timbo still knows how to twiddle them knobs (he is consistantly one of the best producers in the game). Timbo's new album, from which the track of the day stems, is out on April 3rd.

Emmon is getting the questionable honour of being post number 100 on this blog! Emmon is from Sweden and also part of indie band Paris. Being from the great neighbour to the east of course means that Emmon has great tunes and great pop flair. Apparently it's genetic. Also there is a nice 50's aesthetic side to her, which I love.

If you're in Copenhagen you can see her perform sometime late April - According to her website the live show is "hot, addictive and sweaty" - nice stuff. There is also a Melody Club remix in the works.

Tune of the day is Frenzy Eyes which features a nice italo disco style synth bass line, disco handclaps galore, nice pads, and nice vocals. Everything this blog likes.

New York quartet Brazilian Girls went to play battlezone Copenhagen tonight. Dodging groups of anarchist rable and police, I went to see them.

Not a huge showing, but enough people for the place not to seem empty. The usual hype crowd weren't there which was a surprice - or did I just miss something?

Lets start with what is almost as important as they sound - how they look. The guys looked like a backing band hired to do whatever it is they do. One of them had dreadlocks... This is still the biggest don't if you're not in reggae band. The singer, Sciubba, was cool on the other hand! Pink cat suit, pink stilettos, yellow flowerthingy. A cool focal point, in an otherwise bland presence.

The style of Brazilian Girls is something of a wildcard to describe. Something like, the calypso drums of Poor Leno, disco house, jazz (as always in the worst sense), a bit of punk, and Bjørk. Surprisingly effective at time, surprisingly boring at times. Not the best concert of my life, but by far also not the worst.

Second track is the mighty Wurz+Blosse released on Kompakt. This is one of those tracks released on Kompakt that have turned to instant classics. Sounds like rolling thunder or the apocalypse, in the best possible way. I still remember the first time I heard this at Berghain... The simple bassline is hypnotic, the breaks immaculate.

I wonder whats up (or is that down?) with Australia. Cut Copy, The Presets and hype bonanza Van She. It's the place to be on the other hemisphere.
Latest blossom to emerge is Muscles. Sounding like a Lo Fi FNK coverband gone techno. Catchy tunes galore and lots of humor - Hurra!

He has a single out on Bang Gang 12" sometime April - Be sure to pick that up. Distortion Disco is placing a handsome amount on this guy being big this year.

First tune is Ice Cream - candidate for best chorus this year: "Ice Cream is going to save the day - again!" - Hmmm maybe we should start bombarding select areas of the world with ice cream? This tune is what being 12 years old is all about. Dancy, funny and unavoidable. Oh yeah and infectious synths!

Guess what I saw/heard/danced to Friday night? Following a rather bass drum heavy upfront warm-up set by Djuna Barnes, Vega witnessed what was the most hyped ticket in town. I have been to Vega a zillion times by now, and I have NEVER seen a line formed that quickly or that long for anything. Winning that MTV award sure did the trick huh?

At Roskilde Festival I was rather disappointet by Jus†ice (I remember there only being one of them) playing a rather ordinary unfocused set which quickly fell in the category of boring.
That was not the case at Vega! I was trying to think up a way to describe what I really like about Jus†ice - The only thing I could come up with was Urgent and Vital. It just seems so must more necessary than anything else, so bloody aggressive without falling into cliché or being metal. For me the highlight was the old skool disco song that started the set. The crowd was taken completely by surprise. Disorientated dancing ensued... was this what Jus†ice sounded like? Then it hit like a cat with sharp claws being dragged over your skin: The snare drums of the Erol Alkan remix of Waters of Nazareth! Huge flashing cross on the stage and a deafening roar! I'll let you guess at the rest.
