Bamm! Kapow! Göttsching!
Manuel Göttsching was guitarist in a 70's Krautrock ensemble called Ash Ra Temple, but it is his adventures as proto-techno forefather that is the subject here. The one hour long track E2-E4 was improvised and recorded live in 1981 in Göttsching's appartment, but only released in 1984 - to a critical press and public. It was apparently NYC DJ legend Larry Levan who first brought the track to prominence by playing it in its entirety at the end of his sets at the Paradise Garage, And from there it went on to inspire the first techno producers of the early eighties.
First hearing about of the track I didn't really expect it to be as listenable as it truly is - an hourlong krautrock electronic jam doesn't normally bode for an easy ride. But after having played it out all day long it feels like a forgotten blissfull balearic house anthem. Endless variations of the main melody figure drift by while small percussion glide in and out of the mix, and the guitar fills half an hour in adds a beautiful human sound. It is almost New Agey but luckily just to strange sounding to fall into that pit.
To really hear the balearic connection, hop on over to Dilated Choonz for an extra sunny rework the song from 1989 by Sueño Latino that adds piano and bird noises to the E2-E4 sample for a true summer of love Ibiza feel.

Bonus: To mark the 25th anniverary of E2-E4, Manuel Göttsching is preforming it live and alone at Berghain in Berlin on the 12th of December. Don't miss if you are around!

Manuel Göttsching is often mentioned as a key influence by the Norwegian space disco army (Lindstrøm, Todd Terje, Prins Thomas), and for added effect comes a Prins Thomas' tribute track, simply named Goettsching. The floating synth layers are a bit reminicent of E2-E4 but the track is mainly driven by a great disco bassline.
